There is no set scale, but I tend to think of a 6 base unit of close order infantry as being around 500 men. So your Swiss unit would be around 900 strong. Again I emphasise that this is not mandated by the rules.

Can't really comment without watching a game, but haven't found this problem. Most times the way out of a corner is to evade a charge? Remember skirmishing horse shoot out of any face. You don't have to form in a column, and could try 5 bases instead of 6?

The problems relate to either allowing players to bring their own terrain, which sometimes results in poor quality, or the organisers needing to have a very large amount of terrain available, which can be impracticable. I would prefer to allow players to bring their own and use the terrain placement...

If you mean when evading, they are allowed to change their direction by the minimum necessary to stay on the table.

Yes it is a 45 degree fall back with the alignment relative to the table edge remaining the same.
