Battle Line

Postby lero » Sun Oct 22, 2017 6:29 pm

When it is written : "no more than 1" laterally", does it means parallel ?
If not, does all the bases in the flank zone to be at 1" or less ?
If not, could you have a curved line of battle, with three units with the second at 45° and the third 45° from the previous so 90° from the first one ?

IMHO, the strict parallel option generated very beautiful battle line with a tactical interest with large units between being in line of battle or oriented with an angle to charge flank after, but out of the line, because not parallel.

A lot of talks about this rules clarification as a video on the net showen a non-linear line of battle !

The battle line does not need to be parallel to gain the benefit of LoB. As long as part of one base of a unit is within 1" of a base in another unit that it is alongside then it is in LoB. The book shows a diagram where one of the units is at 90 degrees to the other units and in LoB.

So often your units will be parallel (and yes it does look good) there can also be times when your LoB can be curved, just think of it conforming to unseen contours on the battlefield, or an attempt to protect a flank from the enemy.

So you can put two units not strictly aligned in a way that you have LoB and opportunity to charge on the flank of the other unit.
With two units against one, you take a v position with a wide angle and the opponent can't charge both because its leader will not contact the enemy, so charge only one which have LoB and a friend ready to flank charge after, did I well understand ?

If your opponent is foolish enough to leave his unit isolated with unprotected flanks (i.e. not in a Line of Battle of its own), then yes.
