An elephant will stampede in the direction determined by a D6 roll, as described on page 40 of the rulebook.

ok
so it's very dangeroux to attack the back or the fkank of an elephant
when ennemy is distant it's preferable to advance the elephant back (it will stampede in th ennemy line).

It is very dangerous to attack an elephant from any direction! :)
Elephants cannot voluntarily move backward, as that would violate the maneuver rules outlined on page 20 of the rulebook.

it's legaly possible

i advance 6" ahead and make a about face so my back is near the ennemi, next move i make a about face, 4" ahead and a new about face and then i stamped in ennemi line

I think an elephant must panic the opposite of the cause of panic

An elephant cannot voluntarily stampede. The only way to do what you propose would be to attack it with your own troops. And even if you did manage to somehow pull off such a complex and 'gamey' maneuver, the net result would be exactly the same as if the elephant had simply charged straight ahead in the first place, so there wouldn't be any point to it.

The semi-random direction of an elephant stampede righty depends on the beast's original facing. If it was instead based on the direction from which the enemy attacked, then the opposing unit(s) could attempt to force the elephant to stampede 'sideways' down its own battle line, which IMHO would also be rather 'gamey.'

I never wanted to deliberately panic my elephant.

if it is the orientation of the elephant that counts, I optimize this one so that I do not suffer his panic.

the rule makes it difficult to attack an elephant flank or back because it will panic towards you. (which is absurd because normally does not he try to avoid the cause of his panic?)

A panicked elephant is unpredictable. It may indeed run away from the source of its pain. Or, maddened by fear, agony and rage, it may charge the very thing that is hurting it. That's a risk/reward calculation that needs to be taken into account, and does not seem at all "absurd" to me. Naturally, YMMV. That's what house rules are for.

Ok but your respone isn't logic, If i charge the front of the elephant i have no risk, If i charge is back the risk is maximum.

I read only two condition for stampeding : Loss after shooting and dead mahout.
So an elephant flee as other unit. But I imagine he fight unit that block its path.
