Starting up

Postby crispylegion » Thu Feb 22, 2018 5:00 pm

We are some guys who has just barely started playing sword point..

After just pushing some units around(ancient/darkage), it seemed that Well armoured closeorder infantry was the the thing that worked best,,

Just a few questions

1) Skirmishers..any good...?? Are they a must in army?

2)After we tested cavalry, it seemed it didnt have the punch to break through closeorder ranks? How should it be used?

3) Open order, including those warband types... They also failed crashing into the front of closeorder infantry.. how should they be used? Are they terrain dependent?

4) How many bases should a unit have.. it appears 6 is a good number for most???

5) How much bowfire bases are needed, to actually make a bowunit a bit scary??

6) Can a throwingspear actually be thrown??(inc heavy)..

7) How important are commanders... and at what ratio should be aimed for?

Just want to get a few pointers,,,

1) Skirmishers..any good...?? Are they a must in army?

When used properly they can be helpful, but are not game winners in their own right.

2)After we tested cavalry, it seemed it didnt have the punch to break through closeorder ranks? How should it be used?

They most probably will not break through open order infantry, but are excellent for getting on to the flank of a unit.

3) Open order, including those warband types... They also failed crashing into the front of closeorder infantry.. how should they be used? Are they terrain dependent?

Again they have the mobility to get on to the flank of close order infantry and for holding difficult ground. They can stand in the battle line if properly supported.

4) How many bases should a unit have.. it appears 6 is a good number for most???

Generally yes, although eights can work well for open order

5) How much bowfire bases are needed, to actually make a bowunit a bit scary??

Well 12 bases can generate 15 shots which is pretty nasty. Bases of 6 can put out 8 shots which is nasty enough. You will learn to concentrate your bow fire to maximise the impact on an individual unit. Normally you only need 3 unsaved hits on a unit to cause 10% casualties and gain a momentum token.

6) Can a throwingspear actually be thrown??(inc heavy)..

No, they just generate extra hits in the first round of combat.

7) How important are commanders... and at what ratio should be aimed for?

They are important for morale purposes and can make a difference for units out on their own. Also good for cavalry to boost the number of attacks the unit can have.
