Four player Dark Age

Postby guard » Thu May 18, 2017 8:22 pm

Hi all
Just a few pics of the Swordpoint 15mm game played on the 13.05.2017 and a very brief more of a feeling for the game than a write up – It was a four player encounter between armies not totally historically correct period wise or in the actual figures used, some proxy usage was needed awaiting soon to arrive reinforcements.

John – Early Dark Age British (DAB) & Martin – Viking (V)
Mick Early Scottish (ES) & Dave – Anglo Danish (AD)

600 points per player

Both sides moved to their deployment areas where it soon became clear that the higher/ better terrain was going to be held by the DAB / V, their forces either holding or being able to move to hills / woods fairly quickly. The ES / AD allies tried a right flank infantry load out which generally did not have the advantageous effect it was meant to.

Both sides started a general advance but tactically the DAB central “light skirmishers” move toward the enemy through woods / farmed fields had an almost immediate effect in that the opposing (AD) lights were forced to respond by concentrating bow and sling fire against them to very little if no effect (Bad dice rolling v hard to hit lights anyway).

The DAB light skirmishers did far better when shooting throughout the game, all that practise outside the village ale houses certainly paid off.

The ES/AD cavalry was sent to their left flank to combat the enemy horse, this appeared to be the correct thing to do as the terrain across the central and right sectors did not seem very good for cavalry, especially with enemy formed infantry to their front. Not sure this was good tactic with hindsight as it held up some good units, it did stop that side of the battle lines being outflanked I suppose?

The general advance and attack by the ES/AD Spear and Axe units across the table continued throughout the day with close combat taking place along the battle lines mostly being drawn or won by the better positioned Vikings in the first instance with their allies the DAB mainly using their infantry formations in safe guarding their right flank.

As the day was coming to an end, the battle weary ES/AD troops had taken an extreme amount of punishment having been mostly (Very Badly) let down by the role rolling of their The last Scottish attack on the right flank looks like it would do some good but this was not to be.

As it happened adding up all the points lost, the win was only marginally in favour of the DAB / V at game finish but to be honest it did look like it was only going one way.

Hope you like the pics, the forces provided by all the players – Point of note: Some of the pictures relate to the fall back question posed by LeadMountain May 15, 2017 12:52 pm in Swordpoint Rules section.
