Scots vs Normans

Postby Wayne Richards » Sun Jun 11, 2017 8:23 am

Scots: 6 command, 1 x 6 Mounted Thanes, 1 x 6 Norman Knights, 2 x 6 Thanes, 1 x 8 Spear, 1 x 6 Spear, 1 x 6 Viking Hird, 1 x 6 Vikiing Bondi (skirm)
Normans: 6 command, 3 x Mtd Knights, 1 x 6 dismounted knights, 1 x 6 Breton retainers, 1 x 6 Bow, 1 x 5 xbow, 1 x 6 bow (skirm) 1 x 6 xbow (skirm)

Both sides deployed with their infantry to the centre and the cavalry and skirmishers to the flanks.

The Scots advanced in the centre using their shieldwall special ability to minimise the impact of the Norman shooting phases. The Normans did manage to accrue a few momentum tokens for disrupting units.

Meanwhile the Norman knights advanced on the flanks looking to engage the Scots cavalry.

The Norman cavalry line up for the charge. In the centre the Scots Thanes begin to suffer from the combined fire from the Norman archers and crossbows.

On the opposite flank the renegade Norman mercenaries are about to get some rough justice from their fellow countrymen.

The Scots centre begins to close in on the Norman infantry.

The Scots cavalry do a sterling job and hold the Norman knights who only manage a push back. This gives the Scots infantry time to engage in the centre. The plucky Norman crossbowmen hold the Scots spear (thanks to momentum tokens). The dismounted Norman knights beat back the Thanes.
The open order Viking allies finally push through the wood to threaten the Norman cavalry reserve.
Turn (9 of 14).jpg
The Scots Thanes thump into the flank of the engaged Norman knights, who bravely hold.
Their fellow knights have faired better on the opposing flank and having routed the Norman mercenaries and recovered their order they begin to threaten the rear of the Scots battle line.
Turn (10 of 14).jpg
The Open order Breton retainers rush to the aid of knights and fall upon the exposed rear of the Thanes.

The tide turns as the Normans finally break the Scots cavalry and the Thane foot on the left flank. The Scots spear are unable to break the Norman crossbowmen.
Turn (12 of 14).jpg
The noose tightens around the remaining Scots thanes as Normans fall on them from all directions.
Turn (13 of 14).jpg
The fresh Norman cavalry reserve charges home against the weary Vikings who don't have the strength left to wield their axes and are routed.
Turn (14 of 14).jpg
The Scots army breaks and flees back north of the border.....England for now, remains secure and stable.

POST GAME ANALYSIS: The Scots faced the common problem of how to secure their flanks from the superior Norman cavalry. Their lack of missile fire means that standing off is not an option. The longer they refuse to engage the more momentum the Normans can accumulate. The Scots player must decide whether to advance cautiously using shieldwall or quickly without, both have their advantages/disadvantages.

Discussion is had over the optimum size for units and the general consensus is that more than 6 bases makes the unit unwieldy. Options for allies are also considered and a rematch is scheduled.

Cheers W.

Wayne nice report, I must sort out the pictures I take with phone and reduce the size. Time to get the kids to sort it.
Have you looked at larger infantry blocks so that it is harder to get the 10%? Equally they can spread out to protect the flanks, but you will lose the depth bonus.
