Lancastrians

Postby Bitesyurr » Mon Sep 10, 2018 9:49 am

Hi All,

After much humming had Hawing, I have finally decided that prioritising my Lancastrian army will get me something to use the quickest.

This army was originally collected for FoGAM, so needs a good few additions, and total rebasing, but a lot less than starting an army from scratch.

Comments on my initial thoughts appreciated:
general plus 3 Captains 60pts
1x6 Mounted M@A, Shock Cavalry, Full plate, Barding 162pts
1x4 dismounted M@A, Full plate,, Double handed weapons, Stubborn 104pts in Mixed units with:
1x8 Retinue archers, Light armour, shield, Longbow, inferior fighters 160
1x6 Hobilars, Heavy Armour, Lance 114 pts
1 mixed units:
3 Retinue Bills, Heavy Armour, Halberd 48pts
6 Retinue Archers, Light armour, shield, Longbow, Inferior fighters 120pt
1 mixed units:
3 Retinue Bills, Heavy Armour, Halberd 48pts
6 Retinue Archers, Light armour, shield, Longbow, Inferior fighters 120pt
1x 10 Militia archers. Open Order, Longbow, Inferior fighter, Levy 60pts
1x 10 Militia archers. Open Order, Longbow, Inferior fighter, Levy 60pts
1x8 Welsh Spearmen. Spear, Shield 80pts
1x6 Welsh Longbows, Longbow, Skirmishers, Inferior fighters 36pts
1x8 Crossbowmen. Open Order, Crossbow, Light armour 80pts

1252 points. 30.4% Horse, 39.6% Retinue, 9.6% Militia, 15.7% Foreign. Break points 23/12.

Question :
1. have I costed the mixed units correctly?
2. The retinue and Militia archers can have stakes. However, can these be used if in a mixed unit?
3. Is it a good idea to put the dismounted M@A in a mixed unit. Would it be better to have 6 dismounted M@A, and incrfease the size of the mixed retinue units to 12 bases? (changes army to 1256 points, horse becomes 34.4%
4. Should I drop something to get an extra 2 captains?
5. Is artillery worth it?
6. Militia archers can have stakes, Welsh archers are not levy. I suspect the choice here depends on teh situation.

Regards

Adrian

Mixed units look right but crossbows don't.
You can't use stakes in a mixed unit.
Unit composition is a personal thing, try it both ways and see which you prefer.
More captains equals more dice, but if your key combat units have them you can get away with the rest.
Artillery can be useful, especially in tournaments where you may face more exotic armies, but I only take them if I have points left over.

Having reviewed the list again, I realise that the percentage of Retinue troops is way too low (should be 50% at least).

I have adjusted the army as follows:
Option 1:
General plus 4 captains - 80pts
4 units each of 3 dismounted M@A and 6 retinue archers (4x198) -672pts
1 unit of 10 Retinue Bills (heavy armour) -160pts
2 units of 10 militia archers with stakes - 160pts
2 units of 6 Welsh longbow skimishers

1264 points. 25% Horse, 51% Retinue, 13% militia, 6% Foreigners.

Option 2:
General plus 4 captains - 80pts
2 units each of 6 dismounted M@A and 6 retinue archers (2x276) -552pts
2 units each of 3 Retinue bills (heavy armour) and 6 retinue archers (2x198) -396pts
2 units of 10 militia archers with stakes - 160pts
2 units of 6 Welsh longbow skimishers

1260 points. 25% Horse, 51% Retinue, 13% militia, 6% Foreigners.

The units are partly selected so that I do not have to collect and paint any more Retinue!

Both variants have the same shooting power, but option 1 is more flexible, so I would try that first.
