Sassanid Persians

Postby vladarethull » Mon Dec 12, 2016 8:25 am

Hi Guys,

I've played a Early Sassanid Empire list this weekend and managed to get a Major victory quite safe and secure with it. Even though now I would make some changes to it in order to further optimize it:

Sassanid List (early)

Shah 50 (mounted)
5x Nobles 75(mounted)
2x Elephants(extra crew, shields) 138
4x Early Azatan Noble Cavalry(cataphracts armour, barding) 100
4x Early Azatan Noble Cavalry(cataphracts armour, barding) 100
4x Early Azatan Noble Cavalry(cataphracts armour, barding) 100
4x Early Azatan Noble Cavalry(cataphracts armour, barding) 100
4x Early Azatan Noble Cavalry(cataphracts armour, barding) 100
4x Early Azatan Noble Cavalry(cataphracts armour, barding) 100
4x Early Azatan Noble Cavalry(cataphracts armour, barding) 100
5x Skirmishers bow 20
4x Skirmishers bow 16

999

The strong points of the list is the always strikes first Kontos and the facts the in attrition fights it out-wounds the enemies quite easy.
The match was fought against Late Imperial Romans.

What I would change right now to the list is lose the elephants and get more bases in the units of cataphracts and also lose the barding on some of them to make them more mobile (not really sure about the last one).

An interesting list. Having played Sassanids quite a bit I agree about ditching the elephants, they are usually more trouble than they are worth but they look good on the table.
I normally shy away from units of 4, due to having to take a cohesion test if you lose a base to shooting (25%) but I guess the cataphract armour and the barding helps out with that :)
Are you assuming that you benefit from the close order/rank bonus for being massed cavalry if you are only 2 wide ?

cheers W.

Hi,

I know that I am not benefiting the depth bonus if I were 2 units wide :) , and also I don't think I can charge with the only being 2 bases wide. I was using them like this so I can have more units for putting pressure in multiple places at once.
In my reviewed list I would play them like this:

General 0
5x Nobles 75(mounted)
6x Early Azatan Noble Cavalry(cataphracts armour, barding) 150
6x Early Azatan Noble Cavalry(cataphracts armour, barding) 150
6x Early Azatan Noble Cavalry(cataphracts armour, barding) 150
6x Early Azatan Noble Cavalry(cataphracts armour, barding) 150
6x Early Azatan Noble Cavalry(cataphracts armour) 144
6x Early Azatan Noble Cavalry(cataphracts armour) 144
5x Skirmishers bow 20
4x Skirmishers bow 16

Total:999

This way I would have the depth bonus and more mobility. But I would like to emphasis on the matter that I will never ever play Sassanians again, I am to much of a Byzantine fan to play " the enemy"

Do all your Noble cavalry have a bow?

@Keith T

Sorry, now I understand what you meant with the bows. In order for the list to be legal consider all the skirmishers dropped and all the units armed with bows.
