Early Imperial Roman Army

Postby Robin » Tue Dec 13, 2016 2:18 pm

Hi Guys. I have just purchased this army. Decided to go for Caesarian Romans ie those in chain mail as I like the feel of the later Republic and figure once the Classical lists come out the Later Republican army should be fun. It also crosses over nicely into 1st century AD Western Roman Empire.
All I have done so far is watched a game, bought the rules and am poised to start putting the thing together. At the mo the composition is this:

Commanders:
General x 1 0pts
Centurions x 2 10pts

Legionaries: (Chain mail)
Legion/ Seasoned/ Vets / x 6 168pts
Legion/ Seasoned/ Vets / x 6 168pts
Legion/ Seasoned/ Vets / x 6 168pts
Legion/ Seasoned/ Vets / x 6 168pts

Auxiliaries: (Gallic types)
Auxiliaries / HTW / Light Armour x 6 120pts

Cavalry:
Cohort Cavalry x 5 105pts (Roman Cav types in chain mail)
Equites Cavalry x 5 95pts (Germanic Auxilia type)

7 Units at 1002 points

Comments/advice welcome

Once this army is complete I shall probably build Normans followed by A medieval army. but that's in the future.

Regards
Robin

Well, I would really try to use archers, they are really good against cavalry.

Do you mean I should use archers ? Unfortunately I cant have many. What do I drop to get them ? TBH with what I have at the moment my two cavalry units and the Auxiliary would probably deploy on the flank and to the rear of the Legionnaires, there job would be to stop the opposition getting onto the legions flanks. Cavalry would hit and run !!! LOL well that's the theory.

Hi Robin - you could get away with the legion units being 5 bases rather than 6. The Stamina rule combined with your 4+ save means you are unlikely to be taking off many bases. You could field 4 x 5 Seasoned units and 1 x 5 Raw unit for around the same points as 4 x 6 seasoned.
This give you an extra unit for the battle line or to be held in reserve.

I'd field the auxiliaries as Open Order to give you greater flexibility in terms of movement.

Let me know how you get on - cheers W.

Give me a shout if you want a game Robin. I'll be doing an El Cid type army based on the Normans, until an official list comes out.

Cheers

Pete

I would echo Wayne's comments, I think 5 is the optimal number for Legionary bases, as it is very hard to kill a base - it's just a shame it looks odd.

I would also max out the characters to increase your cohesion - 1 general, 3 legates and 4 centurions. Also remember in this game, once a unit breaks, it ain't never coming back unless you have a command figure somewhere behind to stop it.
