New Clascal Republcan Roman 105 30 BC List query

Postby Robin » Tue Apr 04, 2017 11:17 am

Bi cheeky I know BUT !!
I have pre odereded the new classical lists from GB. I have a Roman army already but want to buy a few extra bits for it such as some Peltasts/Auxilia, Numidians, and a few skirmishers, any chance of letting me know what support troops are available to the list so I can get on and buy them ? I can guess but would then need to order more bits. particularly want to know if Numidian or Similar Skirmish Cavalry. Skirmishing Javlin and Skirmishing Bow types.

Which Republican Roman List?

There's several I recall:
Polybian - about 400bc-250bc (inc First Punic War)
Camillan- about 250bc-105bc (inc Second Punic War)
Late Republican - about 105bc-30bc (Marian/ Caesarian)

There's also an earlier list, plus an Early Imperial and Mid Imperial list!

Of course I paid no attention to the subject and only read the body of the post!

Let me have a look and get back to you later...

Robin, at a high level you can have:

Spanish, Gallic or German formed cavalry

Spanish and Numidian skirmish cavalry

Skirmish javelins and slings (think Numidian, Gauls Spanish, Germans, Illyrians, Thracian, Greeks)

Allies from Numidian, Pergamene and Armenian lists, plus a couple of units of Illyrian Warriors (so you could have Thureophoroi (Peltasts) and skirmish bows from the Pergamene list, Cataphracts from the Armenian list, as examples)

Of course, the core of your army needs to be Legionaries!

Hope this helps,

Ed

The skirmish javelins, slings and bows from here will be suitable: http://www.grippingbeast.co.uk/Hellenis ... y--95.html

There's Pergamene cavalry here:

:D
Just as a couple of suggestions 😎

LOL Thanks for that Ed I shall get on and order some bits. I deliberately bought and painted the Legionaries in chain mail so I could go Late Republican or Early Imperial. Would have loved 2nd Punic war as they look the dogs nuts but IMO you just cant get the mix right. Having said that with Swordpoint I suppose as they are on bases with four figures you could have the figures in the same unit ie first 2 figs Hastati, then Principes and last 2 figs on the base of course the Triarii !! might look nice but not sure of practicality !!!

Any idea when the books will be posted out ?

Blimey that smiley was bigger than I thought, not what I intended!!!

I think GB have said The book will be released and available at Salute, and that pre-orders will be in the post the following week. So we only have less than three weeks to wait!

No Cretan archers to serve as auxiliaries for Caesar's legions, Ed? :(

If I recall correctly you can get Cretan Archers by taking them from the Pergamene allies list. I can't recall the exact restrictions though.
