Armoured Illyrians

Postby Gerry Brawley » Sat May 20, 2017 7:24 pm

Can anyone suggest some figures suitable for a unit of Illyrian Warriors with a Large Shield and Light Armour

Also some figures for Amenian Barded Cavalry / Catephracts.

You might as well use Parthian or Sasssanid figures for Armenians, depending on the period of the army.
Illyrians are a bit more of a problem (I have been discussing a range with a few people). Early in their period, the Hoplites may be wearing "old fashioned" bell cuirasses and some of these would pass over to the Warriors as the hoplites modernised. The Illyrians were subject to influences from Italy as well as the Balkans. You could try (if you want to spend the money) mixing bodies from the Victrix armoured Samnite box with heads from their hoplite box. Shields could be hoplons from the hoplite box, scuta from their Rome's Allies box or shields from the Samnite box. As you go later in the period you can use some chainmail figures as well.

I was thinking of using them as an ally for some Caesarian Romans, so maybe some thorakitai with large Samnite Shields ?

Gerry

I am using Warlord Games Sarmatian barded cavalry as allied Armenian cataphracts for my Early Imperial Roman army. They are nice figures well worth a look.

Yes the thorakitai would work (I have used these) though ideally you need some non-greek heads. Also try to get at least 3 shield types-you don't want a uniform appearance.

What heads would you suggest ?

Prabably a mix of Roman, Samnite and Hoplons for shields then.

The odd thureos too, its just uniformity that should be avoided. The various greek helmets are all fine, also italian ones but try to avoid all the plumes which shout "Italy"!

Would the Victrix Samnites be suitable if I removed all the plumes and feathers?

If you removed the feathers yes, though you should avoid the triple disc cuirass and get plenty of alternative heads-some good ones in the Greek boxes.

Thanks Martin, so all I need to do now is find someone with the Plastic greeks, and "borrow" a few!
