Cavalry - Underpointed?

Postby Rank Bajin » Tue Oct 08, 2019 1:21 am

Gents,

my mate has been doing his nut as he thinks Cavalry are way over-pointed.

He's built spreadsheets galore to prove the point - as the point system isn't clear as to why two knights are the roughly the same price as 4 hirdmen yet are more fragile, and to him less hard hitting

A lot of this stems from his Christian Spanish cavalry not running through my Hirdmen.....

are there any threads which have addressed this - does it feel like a valid point?

cheers

Roy

err...cavalry units should not be able to ride through formed heavy infantry!

If you are just doing a simple analysis on combat performance then your friend is correct.

However, when you take into account that cavalry have many other attributes not shared by close order infantry I am not sure you can claim that they are underpointed.

1 They are not march blocked by nearby enemy units.
2 They move much more quickly and therefore will nearly always charge infantry generating momentum tokens
3 They can counter charge and therefore get charge benefits
4 They can disengage infantry with impunity
5 They have the speed and maneuverability to more easily get around flanks and to prevent this will often require a couple of infantry units to be positioned to stop this.
6 A cavalry unit in the flank/rear is not a pleasant experience for formed infantry even if they pass their cohesion test.

This is not a complete list - personally I think they are under pointed, but then I am terrible at using cavalry!

I know Bob - but as he's spent to much time with engineers so he likes a number for everything :-)

If you really want to get your friend going with the numbers, try to get him to model the benefits of drilled at 3pts a base, stubborn at 2pts a base and trained phalanx at 2 pts a base...
