If you are talking about a Medieval Phalanx, make sure to check out the rule thoroughly as it is quite different to the classical one!

A larger unit is more resilient against incoming shooting, but is harder to manoeuvre and allows an opponent to get two units in against it, such as a six-base infantry unit and an elephant or scythed chariot. As it says "up to half" you would have to take a warrior unit as well.

No darts are only useful in the shooting phase, where of course they interface with bow-armed rear ranks to give many more shooting dice than a javelin-armed unit can muster.
